A Joliet man was arrested for allegedly trying to steal copper piping from a home that was being rehabbed, police said.

About 3 p.m. Thursday, Willie Bridges Jr., 40, of the 900 block of Magnolia Avenue, was arrested by police on a charge of residential burglary.

Joliet Police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said a home in the 1300 block of Fairview Avenue was being rehabbed, and the owner had copper piping he was planning to install that was lying on the basement floor of the house.

Bridges allegedly was in the basement and in the middle of making off with the copper piping when law enforcement arrived. Bridges began to run away but was captured by officers, Gregory said.

Bridges was arrested and booked into the Will County jail at 5 p.m. Thursday. His bond was set at $100,000, of which 10 percent is needed to be released on bail. Bridges remained in custody Friday evening.
