This week we remember Tom Petty and check out last week’s top music stories On the Radar. Tom Petty dies at 66 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0JvF9vpqx8 Last week we lost another music icon. Tom Petty died on Monday (Oct. 2) of a cardiac arrest. He was 66 years old. Petty was found unconscious in his Malibu home on Sunday (Oct. 1). He suffered a full cardiac arrest and was rushed to the hospital. Petty was placed on life support, but when there was no activity in his brain, the plug was pulled as part of a “do not resuscitate” order Petty’s family signed. The rocker clung on to life still in critical condition but passed on peacefully on Monday night. Petty’s longtime manager Tony Dimitriades confirmed the news in the following statement: “On behalf of the Tom Petty family, we are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader, and friend, Tom Petty. He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was tak..
Masters of making you think long and hard about life, Metallica brings to awareness our predisposition to self-destruct. Headlining 10th Anniversary Outside Lands on a Saturday night in a city that has come to embrace the place where James Hetfield historically brings bandmates to FIRE them, Tommy’s Joynt, I knew this show would be nothing short of master puppetry. Metallica, backed by an unforgettable setlist, recognized their changed listening demographic. I finally allowed myself to listen past the fear of the ‘devil’ music I’d heard in the past, to really listen to what is being said. Eye-opening. Metallica’s first guitar slash cut the stale air which formed around those of us who refused to budge from the small grass patch we occupied since the end of the last Lands End Stage set. I’ve always been amazed at Metallica’s ability to slay guitar as they do, pounding together as hard as their endurance allows in the death mosh-rock metal-melody marathon. Heavy. Heavy metal classics..

It ended up being a late Wednesday night at the Mezzanine in San Francisco. Kingdom opened the night with a strong performance well past start time. King Jet wasn’t anything to get excited about, but you could feel anxiety building to see TOKiMONSTA during his set. The sold-out crowd waited patiently, impatient chanting “Toki, Toki” seemingly coaxing her onstage. Everyone was there to see her. The story of overcoming incredulous odds was something we needed to see for ourselves. We needed to see her. Once she came out, she was all smiles embracing every minute of what was about to happen. There’s a good energy about her with a quietly confident positive personality that lends itself to making something happen – she’s already proved that she does make it happen. An ultimate collaborator, creator, and producer she’s worked with some of the greats. She did not sing and barely spoke, almost as if she was too shy to. She was mashing up her hits and spinning others. A DJ is always in their..
