Thankful kangaroo offers a handshake after three men save it from freezing lake

We always love seeing people helping animals. It is a truly thankless job: animals do not usually show much appreciation for a good deed.

But sometimes animals have a sweet way of saying “thank you” to their saviors, like a kangaroo who shook hands with the men who saved him.

According to Daily Mail Australia, a man named David Boyd spotted a kangaroo at Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. The water was reportedly freezing and the animal was unable to get out.

But then, two brave passersby braved the icy waters to help the roo to safety.

The men approach carefully so as not to scare the kangaroo. Once they get close and try to grab his arms to take him to safety, the kangaroo starts waving his arms.

But undeterred, the men grab the animal and pull it out of the water.

A third man helps lift the kangaroo onto solid ground and helps keep the frightened, trembling animal calm.

While they seem friendly, kangaroos can be dangerous if they feel threatened. Its defenses include a strong punch similar to that of a boxer, sharp claws, and a kick that experts say can disembowel a man.

Fortunately, this kangaroo seemed to understand that these men were there to help and, in a touching moment, even extended his paw as if to offer a handshake.

“Oh, he’s thanking you,” the man filming the rescue is heard saying.

According to Daily Mail Australia, the kangaroo was in “shock” and needed half an hour to calm down.

But according to the Courier Mail, onlookers said the kangaroo eventually moved on, apparently unharmed by the ordeal.
